Clever ideas and innovations that have been incorporated into day-to-day feedlot operations are encouraged to enter the ALFA Innovation Competition, proudly supported by Integrated Animal Production (IAP).
The winner and runner-up will be determined by popular vote and announced at BeefEx, held in Brisbane on 15-17 October 2024.
To vote for your favourite entry, simply click the 'heart' button on the post (this indicates a like i.e. vote). The top four most 'hearted' entries will be offered a complimentary full delegate ticket to attend BeefEx 2024.Â
The entry with the most votes will be announced as the winner. The entry with the second highest will be awarded the runner up. Voting is open from August 10 - September 23. The decision made will be final.
Rangers Valley Cattle Station's 'SmartCommodity Analyser' Innovation
What is your innovation?
'Utilising Automated Volumetric Analysis using Smartphone Photogrammetry for Commodity Inventory Control' 1) Photogrammetry Capture: Use a smartphone with a 12-megapixel camera to take multiple high-resolution photographs of commodity bays or stockpiles. 2) Data Processing and Volumetric Analysis: Upload the captured images to automation software designed for photogrammetry. (Many apps available)
The software analyzes the 3D model to calculate the volume and other relevant metrics of the commodity. 3) Calculate the Bulk Density Measurement of Commodity: Use your grain density scale (Chondrometer) to find the density of the commodity in kg/m³.
Calculate the Mass of the Stockpile: Volume of Stockpile: 1,500 m³ Density of Commodity: 750 kg/m³ Mass (kg) =1,500 m³×750 kg/m³ =1,125,000 kg Mass (MT)= 1,125,000 kg/1000 =1,125 MT So, the mass of the commodity is 1,125MT
What issue/challenge is your innovation solving?
Labour Savings: Reduces manual measurement efforts
Accuracy: Provides precise volumetric data, improving commodity inventory management
Cost-Effective: Utilises readily available technology: smartphone, chondrometer and affordable software
Cost of Innovation:
Smart Phone - $1500, Chondrometer - $400, Software - $60. Total - $1960
Decided by popular vote, the top four most popular innovations will receive a full delegate ticket to BeefEx 2024 in Brisbane this October. The overall winner and runner up will be announced at BeefEx, receiving a prize of $2,500 and $1,000 respectively.
