Goonoo Feedlot have entered their initiative into the inaugural ALFA Community Heroes Award 2021, proudly supported by Lallemand Animal Nutrition. The winner will be announced at the ALFA SmartBeef 2021 Conference in October. Read on to find out more about how this feedlot is going above and beyond to support their local community.
Tell us about your community initiative...
Currently, the Comet State School does not have the funding to support sending the 12 students away to school camp without significant contributions from parents and the community. There are 5 kids at the school who live at Goonoo and all the parents are employed by Goonoo Feedlot. As Goonoo Feedlot has such a large impact on the school we want to do a raffle to raise money for the school camp. The parents and feedlot do not have enough capital to purchase the desirable raffle items and if we were successful in this award we would use the prize money to help purchase the items to help raise more money to send all our kids to school camp.
The P&C is still working through many challenges including funding, time, and resources. The P&C currently have several other initiatives on the go including catering for local camp and rodeo, a number of separate raffles during the year, run the bar at the emerald Rodeo, organise private catering if asked, and support the primary school in holding any educational events that need additional help (e.g. working bees, setting up for school functions and experiments).
What impact is the initiative having on the local community?
The initiative will have a great impact on the local school and its students. It's been 3 years since the students got to go away on a school camp. It will help them learn new life skills and open their eyes to different experiences.
