Teys Charlton brings campdraft to community
By Kate Stark
After localised flooding stalled the inaugural campdraft, the Charlton Campdraft Club bounced back in 2023, hosting a hugely popular event which attracted more than 150 competitors from across the country.
The not-for-profit was proud to host their first event, organised by a group of club members and committee who had never attempted an event before.
The first of its kind, the club reached out to Teys Charlton, hoping to find a cattle supplier for the event.
Teys Australia Charlton manager Ashley Sheahan said the feedlot was more than happy to help out, also signing up as a major sponsor.
“With many of the Club's members being current or former employees of the feedlot, we knew that the cattle would be handled with respect and cared for whilst being a part of the campdraft event,” Mr Sheahan said.
“Being able to give back to local organisations is one of the main goals each year.
“We are very excited to go again this year, not just for the club and the competitors, but also for the community of Charlton to be involved in what is a great family sporting event.”
Mr Sheahan said the club raised more than $7000 from the inaugural event, donating the money to various organisations including Fighting A-T with Grace, breast cancer awareness, Charlton Neighbourhood House, Charlton Year 10’s work experience, Rex Theatre, Charlton Museum and the Charlton Croquet Club.
“The Club also helped one of its members, Tully Bourke, attend the 2024 Junior APRA National Finals Rodeo to compete.”
Recognised as an integral part of the community, the Charlton Campdraft Club was awarded the 2023 Australia Day ‘Event of the Year’.
“We have nine current employees who are proud members of the Charlton Campdraft Club, with three of those on the committee and three former employees are members.”
Mr Sheahan said Teys Charlton is excited to once again supply cattle for the 2024 event after such a successful campdraft last year.
“I think any event where you can donate your own time and effort for the community you live in, as opposed to purely financial support, is a good thing.
“Being involved in the planning, building and running of an event like this from day one and the amount of work and preparation involved, and satisfaction taken from its success, has been very rewarding.”
Mr Sheahan said the team at Teys Australia Charlton are once again looking forward to attending the 2024 event which is planned to run on October 12-13.
