LEADING HAND (Goonoo Feedlot, Comet QLD)

The Role:  Livestock Leading Hand

Who's your Boss:  Livestock Manager

Where You'll live:  Goonoo Feedlot

Why this role exists

As a  Livestock Leading Hand , your role will be varied and your work valued. You will be part of a team directly contributing to the care and maintenance of cattle on the feedlot. There will of course be lots of other jobs to do from cleaning to maintenance of the feedlot, so hard work quite physical work is part and parcel of this role.


No two days will be the same and by following procedures and work schedules and looking out for the safety of your team mates and yourself, is what you find rewarding.


Reporting to the Livestock Manager, you’ll be a proactive and positive member of the crew, who has a passion for cattle, working outdoors and giving your best efforts every day.

Our site

Goonoo feedlot is located in central Queensland, 65km south east of Emerald and 20km south of Comet.  


Duties & responsibilities in our Feedlot

  • General cattle handling and movement

  • Cattle induction procedures

  • Handling and treatment of sick cattle

  • Operate machinery as required

  • Work in a safe and healthy manner

  • Maintain records and follow worksheets

  • Accurate reporting skills to managers

  • Ensure the tidiness and cleanliness of the feedlot

  • Assist and support the Livestock manager and leading hand with the implementation of AACo Policies and Protocols

  • Help manage staff and maintain a high level of staff training

  • Monitor cattle health, wellbeing and performance

  • Maintain a strong commitment to Animal Welfare, QA, HR and WHS will be required

  • Record management via computer programs


 Experience and skills - the official stuff 

  • Previous experience in a feedlot environment preferred

  • Previous cattle industry experience essential

  • Leadership experience

  • Proven Horsemanship ability with sound horses and equipment

  • Available for long-term employment

  • Ability to perform general maintenance and feedlot related duties

  • A thorough understanding of cattle health, wellbeing and drivers of performance

  • Dedication and drive with a high attention to detail

  • A passion for continuous improvement

  • Moderate computer abilities


Other important things to note about your experience and if this role is right for you:

  • This job can be physically strenuous (demanding) from time to time.

  • You will need the ability to frequently lift, push and pull from 10–20 kilo’s and occasionally more.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment, including hats, gloves, safety glasses, covered shoes, and respiratory protection and ear protection as appropriate.

  • This job requires the ability to comprehend written and oral operational and safety instructions and related rules, policies and memos, and to communicate clearly with your co-workers and leaders.
