Drones & feedlots an unlikely match, creating aerial solutions

26 August 2015

Historically, drones have been portrayed in the media, as strange UFO type invasive technology, striking fear into the hearts of all lot feeders. Uncertainty prevailing around where or when they might unleash their aerial assault on feedlot privacy. This uncertainty is about to cease.

The Australian Lot Feeders’ Association (ALFA) intends to debunk some of these myths around drones, at their upcoming BeefWorks conference being held at Highfields near Toowoomba QLD on September 23 and 24.

ALFA has enlisted the expertise of Chief Pilot and Managing Director Rob Gilmour from Hummingbird Drone Solutions to outline the practical applications of Drones and how they can positively impact the Feedlot sector.

Hummingbird Drone Solutions is an Australian owned and operated company, specialising in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) remote sensing. Chief Pilot and Managing Director Rob Gilmour says “there are a number of applications for use around a feedlot, from using high-definition imagery for stock taking of pens, through to monitoring of water supply and feed bunks.” Rob says “the future of UAV’s is a question on everyone’s lips. I believe UAV’s will, over the next 3-5 years, become a reliable tool for Feedlots to conduct remote inspections.”

Mort & Co’s Grassdale Feedlot near Dalby QLD is currently investigating potential applications for Drones within its feedlot operations. The BeefWorks program includes a feedlot tour of Grassdale on Day 2 of the program, where Rob Gilmour will demonstrate how drones can be applied to feedlot operations.
